Mental disorders are divided into different categories with respect to different manners of classifications. One of the modes of classification used by psychologists is the intensity of the mental disorder i.e mild to extreme. The words neurosis and psychosis are often used by psychologists to explain the intensity of disorders. Neurosis is usually on the milder extreme while psychosis is on the severe extreme.

Neurosis and psychosis aren’t just simple grading of intensity . They have their own unique features as well. Each disorder has a unique set of neurotic as well as psychotic features.

Neurosis

One of the most important features of a person suffering from  neurosis is the insight. It is one of the important factors which differentiates neurosis from psychosis.  Individuals suffering from neurosis have a degree of acceptance that they are suffering from a certain mental disorder. Hence individuals suffering from neurosis often seek guidance and counselling. The disorder , whatever may it be, doesn’t effect them to such an extent that they lose their touch with reality. They are fully aware of their surroundings, their mental condition and the way they effect the society. People suffering from neurosis are always in a state of constant struggle with their inner self. Most of the patients are willing and cooperate with their psychiatrist regarding their treatment. Neurosis is often marked by internal struggles of the individuals and their will to recover any way possible. The individuals speech remains intact and is only affected to some mild extent. There is mild effect on an individuals personality.

Individuals suffering from neurosis are capable of self help and usually don’t require any professional help.

Psychosis

Psychosis aka Insanity, is the total loss of touch with reality.  Individuals suffering from psychosis have little to no insight and hence are very difficult to treat. They don’t consider themselves mentally ill . According to a psychotic individual, it is not him/her that is suffering from a mental disorder, it is the people around him/her who are going insane. As the reality of a person suffering from psychosis is very different from that of a normal individual, it is hard to make them cooperate. Individuals suffering from psychosis usually turn to violent tactics if provoked to some extent. The language and mode of speech of an individual suffering from psychosis is affected greatly and is distorted to a great extent. In psychosis every aspect of an individuals personality is affected as compared to neurosis where a part of a persons personality is affected and that also partially. Psychotic individuals are a danger to themselves and the people surrounding them and should be admitted in a mental health institution where they can be taken care of and their needs are fulfilled.

A psychotic individual should only be handled by a professional as their unpredictability can be dangerous to the people surrounding the individual.

“Minds that have withered into psychosis are far more terrifying than any character of fiction.”
― Christian Baloga

Famous American author, Jerome Lawrence, has explained the relationship of a person suffering from neurosis, psychosis and a psychiatrist with a humorous twist,

“A neurotic is a man who builds a castle in the air. A psychotic is the man who lives in it. A psychiatrist is the man who collects the rent.”
